what exactly does the angles on the plate do for you? why cant i just use a flat plate? whats the matter with just stopping the plate after the holes?

The bends give the plate strength. They are using 1/4 inch plate in that kit it looks like. I'm using 3/8 flat plate like how you are talking and it is deflecting some. I'm going to make a new set out of 1/2 inch plate and that should get rid of deflection problems.

what is deflection???

There is allot of stress and pressure on those plates, I mean they are the only thing keeping the axle from falling off, when they are flat the corners bend down and the plate will end up not being flat, so you will want to make the bends on the ends unless you wanna use 1/2 plate ::)

The plates will bend/deflect when you torque your u-bolts in place. If you use some thick steel, they will not.   And for the record I use flat steel because by the time I get around to making the plates, I don't feal like dragging the torches out to bend them. Besides, I get my plate steel for free so it doesn't hurt the wallet as much.

I'd weld a vertical piece no matter how thich it is for bending stress on flat plate. Actually I'd just get a set from the pnp for $5 and not waste my time making them

FORD RANGER REARS ARE AN EXACT FIT TO TOYOTA
living in the desert makes toyotas
a musthave thing . so much desert to crawl in and so few gas stations.
barstow is great, calico and the hammers are both within a half an hour  drive.
