35's with a 3 inch lift?
« on: Nov 09, 2005, 08:11:32 PM »
Does anyone know if it is easy to fit 35's with a 3 inch lift on an '85 extra cab?  I already have fiberglass fenders on the front and was planning on ditching the bed for a fully custom fabbed unit.  So what I'm most concerned about are tire to frame/body clearances up front.  I'm planning on getting custom leafs made either from Deaver or National with the centering pin moved about 2" forward and running a crossover steering setup.  Do I need to run wheel spacers, hammer in the firewall, wider axle or what?

Normally I would go with Marlins proven suspension, but that lift would be too high and I wouldn't be able to fit my toy in the garage.

Any info is appreciated.

Rears up front will move your axle forward 2 inches by themselves.  Drilling the perches back 1 1/2", tubbing the firewall and widening the front axle about 1 1/2" will let them fit.   The rears can be set to about any height you want and leave a lot of money in your bank account to boot. ;)

How will this affect my ride on pavement?  When all is said and done, this will be my only truck for a while, so I need it to serve a dual purpose.

I drive my junk all the time with no issues.  Its all in how you build your packs.  You can have them stupid soft and it'll drive like ass on the street or you can set them up firm and it'll work great.

(Real old old pic, but it gets the point accross)

Off the shelf 3" mysery springs, redrilled spring perches 1 1/2" forward, and 1.5" spacers clear my Q78's great.  They measure a true 35.5" tall and ~11" wide.  A few swings with a BFH solved all firewall contact, the rear needed some trimming obviously.
'85 Xtracab, built 22R, dual cases, spool rear/detroit front, 30 spline longs, Marlin high steer, Q78-15 TSL's, the usual toy build.

Here is rears-up-front with 35/14.50's on 15x10's with 1.5" spacers
Sorry about the funky picture, but the passenger side is jacked all the way up.

So, if I put the stock rear springs up front, do I have to add more leaves to get the lift I want.  I know those will move the front axle 2" forward and that should help with my firewall clearance I need.  I will also have to weld on part of an old spring pack to the right side spring perch to get it to sit level, correct?  I took a look at my '85 and it doesn't look like I can drill the front spring perch forward 1 1/2".  Was yours a SAS conversion joez? or were you possibly talking about relocating the centering pin on the springs themselves?

You will need to add some leafs to the rear packs when you put them up front or they will be WAY too soft and wrap like crazy.  You can easily drill you perch's as they are about 5" long so that leaves about an inch of meet behind the new hole.

he's talking about the spring pearches, the flat spots where the spring sit's on the axle
