Locker in the rear?

Well for right now I am trying to figure out what I should do with my axle in the rear of my 4Runner. It is a rig that I drive fairly sparingly in town, and I want it to be plenty capable off road, I am running 37's right now on all stock running gear (minus the front end, which had a SAS done to it) I have already figured that I am going to put an aussie locker or lockrite in the front. For the rear, I thinking about leaving it open but I didnt know. I would like to throw in the E-locker but it is kind of out of my budget, and I know that I dont want to weld it up. So what does everyone think: Open/Aussie Locker/Lockrite/Detroit. Funds are somewhat limited.
I need help from the experts! :bowdown:

I have a detroit on the back of mine and when it was a DD I hardly even noticed it was back there.. unless I made a turn of course. I've heard Aussies are a great locker as well and a bit cheaper.. but never seen one on the back yet.

Given money, I would Aussie the F&R, but being on a budget, I would Aussie the front and weld the rear up. My  :twocents:

PooWoo its going to lock anytime you turn because that inner tire isn't turning as fast as the outer.  So yea.. lockrite, Aussie, Detriot.. if its a full on locker its going to lock up on any turn..

detroit full locker.  With big tires like 37's, it won't lock up unless you are in the gas.  Mine is unnoticeable unless I'm really in it around a corner.  Off road, it works just like it should.  The detroit will cost more than an aussie, but if it sees any street time at all, you'll wear out the ridges on a aussie locker over a year or two...the detroit is a much better, more durable locker.  In the front axle, which doesn't turn unless the hubs are locked, an aussie locker will be fine until you decide that you really wanted an ARB  :greengrin:

Haha... yeah ok thanks its just for now at least because I am wanting to go with ARB's front and rear down the road but for now, those are some good ideas.

If you are only going to lock up one end, lock up the rear.  Some say it is better to lock up the front because it provids more traction, this may be true but we are not talking rockwells here, were talking toy axles.  You don't want your front axle doing all the work, because it will make you pay. 
I would say Aussie the front, and if it is only driven on the street sparingly, then I would say spool the rear.  Welding does work but if it's not what you want, it's not an option.

What ever you do I would recommend start with the rear, your less prone to breaking axles, and it can take more abuse than the front.  Besides forward donuts are much easier to pull off than reverse donuts :yupyup:

I just put an Aussie in the rear so far I like it,  I do mostly street driving but from what I've heard the aussie will hold up just fine only one way to find out  :yesnod:   
1986 Toyota 4Runner 22re 5spd transmission and dual transfer cases (4.7’s in the rear). E-lockers front and rear.

i got a arb air in the front and i love it but i didnt have the money for the rear so i put in a detroit ez lock and there loud as hell always culnking and snaping and locking up when its not necery i wish i would of just left it open and saved for the other arb. guine gear quick lock is a good locker

 The Aussie locker is very good unit,I went the Detroit in the rear of my runner cause I changed gears and everything. If your worried about the detroit being hard to drive on the street its not that bad,just beware of ice and snow. Its a little tricky but you get used to it. Noise isnt that bad and backlash you get used to. I love my detroit and wouldnt have it any other way=bulletproof. :turtle:  Mike

I run an Aussie locker in the rear of my 85 with 33's and it is hardly noticable until you turn slow in a parking lot...not a big deal.  Given cost as an issue, an Aussie in the rear to start will get you plenty far and make your turns easy in the rocks.  I also agree that the front axles shouldn't be tasked to pull the ass end of the truck up the rocks so lock the back first.  When time and funds permit, I would use the toyota e-locker in the front (or ARB) so you can drive with an open diff up front in the snow and be able to make sharp turns in the woods (east coast style), then lock it up for the rock climbs.  This way the rear is always there (no thinking about it, it just goes) and the front can be toggled on depending on the terrain.

if you aren't going to drive it on the street often then weld the rear and take the $ you are going to spend on front and rear lockers and you will have enuff $ to buy a e locker and put it in the front.
89 ext cab sas with diamond +4 1/2" housing 30 spline longs and hub gears, hp elocker, six studs, arp studs in everything, taco rear with elocker. swaped out 22re for 3.4l supercharged, urd 2.0" pulley, urd fuel management, downey headers, flowmaster, cold air intake, marlin clutch that is straining to hold up
