86 to 85 4-runner front change over
« on: Mar 21, 2006, 08:26:06 AM »
Question, which is easer, installing 85 running gear (5 speed trans, transfer, engine, clutch &  solid axles) on a 86 auto. Or installing all the(86 auto) body, cab, fenders, ect,ect on the 85. Are the auto trans axles differant ratio?. I currently have a complete hammered cab & body 85.      Thanks

I would just go ahead and throw all the 85 stuff onto the 86 you'd be much happier in the long run. 5spd's are better.you can always push start a 5spd not an auto.

This has been asked before, but that is not the point. If you are good at fabrication and metal work, I would say throw the 1985 front axle and all the entrails onto the 1986 frame. But if you are not so good with metal work, welding, and fabrication and have a lot of time on your hands and patience I would say body swap. In the long run, both will take *about* the same amount of time, depending on how fast you work, and if time is a factor in your decision. It is your decision, after all it is your build. Whatever you are best at, go for it.

does any know if a 86 runner cab(auto) & front clip is a direct bolt on to a 85 runner(5 speed) frame & running gear?  are 86 auto gears 4.56 ?

Whoops cabs are as well except for the trans shifter hole and t/case hole.  To swap bodies is time comsuming not really "hard" but the benifit is solid axle etc-etc.
