98 Taco W59 Transmission noise....
« on: Jul 06, 2005, 08:03:43 AM »
??? I am lost as to what exactly is causing this noise. When I am accelerating or coasting in first or second, I get a rattling noise. It sounds louder when I am coasting in gear(clutch engaged). It only happens in first and second. It is louder when cold and then not so loud when hot. Doesn't sound good. :puke:  It goes away when I push the clutch in and it is still in gear and rolling. No other noise in any other gears. Cruises down the highway and around town fine. Shifts fairly good too. Ideas? :help:

Taking a wild guess, bad throwout bearing or pilot bearing maybe.

I was thinking that the pilot bearing could possibly be the problem but I am not sure. I have yet to drop it and take a look. I have a busy schedule and free time is hard to get. I don't think it is the throwout bearing though. It shifts fine and makes no noise with the clutch depressed.   I just wanted to get an idea to get me started in the right direction. If I have to rebuild, it shouldn't be too bad because I already have some experience from rebuilding 2 different W56's. I will see.

I was hoping that I wouldn't have to do any major maintenance to the truck, it only has 132,000 on it. I bought it with from the original owner with 113k on it and his brother was a Toyota Dealership Owner and all the maintenance was done there. I thought the w59 would be pretty tuff. I don't wheel that much and not very hard. Oh well. :dunno:

Thanks for the reply.
