Putting welded diff in?

ok i recently welded a set of gears laying around for my truck and i was wondering when i pull the axle shafts out do i need new seals on the end of them? in other words do i need anything new besides a new diff gasket

you might as well, since your gonna be pulling shafts thru them...might wanna think about a knuckle service as well(bearings, wipers, etc.)

its for the rear of my tuck but will i have problems if i dont replace teh bearings?

nevermind...i was thinking front...just check the bearings and see how they feel...but you prolly oughta change the seals.

Yeah you should go ahead a replace the seals while you got it apart.If you don't and it start's leaking then your gonna have to take it back apart again and chances are by the time you notice it leaking your gonna have to replace the brake shoes too.

I welded my rear gears,and I did'nt change the seals.as a matter of fact, I didnt even change the gasket on the diff!  :hammer: , so I guess you dont HAVE too, but it wouldnt hurt if ya did.  :thumbs:

You don't have to change the seals. I pulled my third probably 5 times over a year and never changed them. I never had a problem with leaks. You don't need a gasket, just some RTV, it seals much better.

No you don't HAVE to change the seal but it's just some cheap insurance.Especially if it has alot of miles.Me personally I would rather not have to take it back apart just to change it in the event it does start to leak.

Or you could replace the seals and not grease them, so you have to replace them again in a couple of weeks like I did  :hammerhead: on one side....Doh!

id atleast replace the diff gasget its only like 2 bucks
85 4runner rears up front f-150s out back dual 2.28 cases 22re, rear discs, 5.29s, locked f/r, 38s....... list goes on and on
