T-Case Gear Specs?
« on: Jun 07, 2005, 03:27:55 PM »
Does anyone have the specs for the gears in a 1985 Top Shift transfer case (RF1-A).

I need to identify what gear is what.
Tooth count?
Diameter?
Thickness?

HELP!

Are you looking for the reduction case gears, or the front output gears?
The gears cannot be mixed up, and you can find pics of them on our 470:1 installition guide.

I'm looking for the gears for the HI-LOW.
I have a case torn apart right now and wanted to assemble the section for the doubler.

Um.... I could get you the numbers on it tomorrow, but really there is no point. Are you courious what ratio you have? Like are they an aftermarket gear set and you're not sure if its the 4.0/4.7/4.97?

The hi/low has:

1 - Input gear. Has a splined shaft on one side and a smooth stud shaft on the other that goes into a pocket bearing.
1 - Counter Shaft. This is the only piece that has two gears attached on the same piece. A larger gear sits next to a pressed on bearing and the smaller gear is next to a smooth shaft that goes into a cage bearing.
1 - Low Range Speed Gear. This is the largest gear and is simply a free gear with a large hole in the middle for a cage bearing. It is not on a shaft and has no bearings attached to it.

If you have a box full of t/case parts and are not sure what gears are for the low range, then match up my descriptions above.

The other gears are:
1 - Single gear attached to a shaft that has one bearing at one end and a smooth shaft on the other end that goes into the cage bearing located in housing #2.
1 - Front output gear. This is obvious as it is the only shaft that has splines for a drive flange and a gear on the same shaft.
1 - Front output drive gear. This is the only other free gear that has no bearings attached and it is very small compared to the low speed gear. It is about the same size as the input gear, but it's a free gear with no shaft or bearings attached.

And that's it. The other pieces are for the oil pump, speedo drive, etc. The largest gear is the low speed gear and it's also a free gear with nothing attached to it, so its obvious what it is........ yadda yadda yadda
