Re-arching springs...
« on: May 17, 2005, 07:53:38 PM »
Ok guys, here goes:

Went wheeling this weekend and worsened my already sagging springs.  My truck leans to the right side almost 2" now, and the front tire rubs, as evident from polished inner fenders  :gap:   Does anyone have any experience with re-arching a leaf spring?  From my understanding, it's a somewhat temporary fix but sometimes works.  With my wedding fast approaching, funds are limited and re-arching may be what it takes to keep my truck wheeling this summer.

Discuss.

here's a quick shot of what kind of terrain resulted in my flattened springs.  Oh, and BTW, they are All Pro springs, and just over 1.5yrs old.

I would just add a leaf to it.

That MAY work!  I'll scrounge for some old leaves...

Any other ideas?

If you wanna re-arch, some welding supply places do spring mfg and re-arching...if you're close, CH Williams in Modesto CA does it...I'm sure others too

just an idea- but whynot build a hybrid pack or through some rears up front for what it would cost you to re-arch...or try extra leafs

Hey Ryan, I had some springs re-arched at New Mexico Spring and Suspension down on 4th st about 10 years ago. They charged ~$200.00 including removal and installation but the springs are still holding the arch.

Thanks for the info...I'll give 'em a call and see what they can do.  I just need to get by for this summer; the truck is going under the knife this fall for some serious re-working.  Hopefully some coilovers will fall out of the sky and land in my backyard...

just a warning that it could be awaste of time and money..worn out springs that are shot will only hold a rearch for a shot time..Your just a typical victom of the all pro sag..i would just replace or build a custom pack and sane your cash..

I bought a dodge ramcharger with rearched springs, and the arch went the way of the dodo bird in about 3 months on the left side, about 5 months on the right.

They are going to fall in my backyard too.

I'd vote for trying an extra leaf maybe from a rear pack.  I have a rear pack I'm taking off this weekend, but I am far away...  :-\\
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I have rearched springs in the past and it is true they will only last for a short while. The springs need to be stress relived after they are arched to keep them from going back. If I not mistaken they need to be shotpeened to relive the stress. Kind of like bending a piece of metal and hitting it with a hammer so it will stay. The amount of work it will take to go this way would be a waist of time. If you could scratch deep enough to get new springs it would be a better way to go.

I know, I know.  I really do need new springs.  With the wedding approaching tho, my chick won't approve any transactions at any facility without "bridal", "bakery", "floral", or "entertainment" in the title...

I'll try to stuff an extra leaf or two in there and see what happens.  Do I want long main-looking leaves or shorter helper leaves?

Are your U bolts long enough to add springs?  You could saw off some 2x4's and put them between your springs and frame. that would keep them from sagging.

 :ha_ha:

Maybe you could put springs on the gift list.
