R154 : “looking” for 3rd gear when shifting
« on: Nov 26, 2018, 07:39:33 AM »
Hi folks,

New here, i’m having some “issues” with the r154.
The transmission is an early model (non tripod) from a mark3 supra i believe.
The r154 is mounted behind a 2jz in a mk4 supra.
The shifter housing has been extended to fit.
When i first got the car, the shifter was sloppy as hell, changed the bushings (seat and ring),
Most of the slop is now gone. But still has another “problem”.

When shifting from 2nd to 3rd, i have to “look for it”, meaning i have go very slightly to the right to be able to get it in gear.
Same with shifting from 5th to 4th, i have to look for it going slightly on the left.
Shifting from 3rd to 4th or vice versa is no problem.

Seems like the shifter doesnt kick back to neutral position correctly in the middle.
Are there springs in the shifter housing that worn out over time and need replacing ?

Thanks in adavnce for your help.

those transmissions are just old and usually beat on. Might just be due for a fresh build. i went through that with my r150. technically the same trans. just take it out and rebuild it.

Sounds like the synchros are bad.

Does it make any unusual noise, whirring grinding or humming?

Are you sure it isn't a short shifter?  If it is a short shifter, that could be your problem, as the cheaper ones are notorious for creating shifting issues.

I accidentally installed those springs on the wrong side once. They are definitely specific
hold this. . .
