Cut and turn fj60 front axle
« on: Dec 06, 2017, 09:41:25 AM »
I’m thinking I need to cut and turn the knuckles on my front axle.  But I had a guy ask why not just cutand turn the pumpkin? It got me wondering also. So my question is- why don’t you just cut and turn the pumpkin? Is there something I need to know? All I’m trying to get is the pinion angle for my front driveline.currently it’s too steep and binds. Thanks for any information

The knuckles are a common cut point because you can just cut the factory weld, and the knuckle balls have a smaller ID portion that slides right into the axle tube. This allows for easy positioning and a factory-like end product. Then you cut and re-mount the spring perches and you can adjust your caster angle and pinion angle at the same time. If you don't need to adjust your caster angle, maybe rotating the center section up is an option, but you'll have to sleeve it internally or externally and there will be an obvious weld somewhere. ZUK has sort of done what you're talking about. Check him out on YotaTech, I don't think he's here as much or at all. He welded a LC 9.5 center into the middle of a Tacoma rear housing.

Thanks for the info. I have a 81 truck with fj60 front axle and 4inch lift. Too steep of an angle. All I need is a few degrees for the driveline to match the output from the tc to the pinion housing. I feel the cut and turn is the “correct” way.  But the pumpkin turn has me wondering?

It can be done, just not as easily as your typical American axle with a cast center section and pressed/welded/plugged in tubes. Like I said, ZUK did something similar except he took a Land Cruiser 9.5 center section and welded it into Tacoma Tubes. See this YotaTech thread. It all starts at post # 326 near the end.
