Gross Polluter in CA
« on: Aug 23, 2021, 04:05:04 PM »
Been waiting for this. Gonna be fun. So my '89 2WD failed miserably, bad cat. Now I'll put all those pieces on the truck to go through the 'test only' stations. Worn out part that gets you a 5 year sentence at the test only smog shops. So, C.A.R.B. E.O.ed headers, cat, exhaust and intake going in!

Yeah, been there. I've had a few tricks in the past, but this time I decided to just go with what I had. Now I can see how all these E.O.ed parts do work. Funny thing is the truck runs really good! The tech was surprised it failed.

California emissions program is another attemp at doing something right done oh so wrong. From it's inception the science has been wrong and the enforcement has been ridiculous. It's been that way as long as I've wrenched on cars. It's also the reason I told them to stuff my license.

Example; Gross Polluter, your vehicle fails miserably due to a failed sensor, or cat etc.. OK, so fix it and get on with it? Nope! For five years you have to test the vehicle every year as a penalty.

Emissions control is a good thing, if done right. I remember the days when the air was brown and my lungs hurt for no reason. The air is not worse than it's ever been, it's better in most respects, but since the CO2 is elevated the whole of the air is worse than it's ever been. Typical politician BS! It's also a reason why our race is doomed, aleays focused on the negative. Always sourcing the negative. Always demonizing the negative. No wonder the human race can't get anything right.

Ordered the cat today, 1200 bucks.  There were less expensive options, but the dimensions were not right or the backorder was too long or whatever reason they could come up with. There is a problem with supply due to the number of cst thefts and precious metal prices, blah blah.

See whay happens in another week.

When my 85 Xtra-Cab failed smog as a gross polluter here in the San Fernando Valley back in 2015. I bought an eBay engine for $1100.00 delivered from Compton, added a new cat and passed the smog test with flying colors. I didnt have to have her smogged every year as a penalty, I never even heard of that.

So, got my $1300 catalytic converter today, Magnaflow. Disappointed to say the least. Build looks cheesy, honeycomb has boogers in it from the manufacturing process. The 2" diameter pipe is 1 7/8" O.D. . The seals won't fit properly to seal against my exhaust equipment. So now I have to get creative.

Allrightythen, got the headers installed. Took two days to get that done, using one arm. Gonna try to get the rest of the exhaust done this week. Bought a bolt in cat, Magna flow, 1200 bucks for a "direct fit" that has an overall length of 17" to bolt up to the 12 1/2" space. Good thing the headers and cat back are needing some fab to fit.

So, took this little truck to an exhaust shop since the cat wasn't going to fit. I didn't like the U-bolt clamps to seal up the slip joints in the "universal" exhaust system, so I hd the guy weld up all the joints. The cat was about 5" too long so the guy ended up taking about 5" off it's total length and flanging up both ends. All installed, it has a pretty tight fit, the headers are within 1/2" of the frame rails and torsion bars. I think I'll wrap the torsion bar. Sound is pretty quiet at idle and cruise with an acceptable noise level under power. There is a bit of a raspy note when gettin' on it. Hearders are looking good and had no issues with the install. T the pipe from the header flange was pretty tight and has U-bolt clamps to hold it together. I recommend welding that piece up. For the cat? don't waste your money on direct fit, the flanges don't fit, and likely too long or short. For the cat back I would just have a shop fab it up, probably cost less and the Magnaflow muff in the LC kit can be improved upon. If I had done a little more research I would have just had a shop fab the exhaust with mandrel bends and used a Dynomax muff.

Now to see if it'll pass smog.

So, replaced the cat, still high on CO. Decided to clean injectors. Found the injectors that were in the truck were rated at 208cc/min as opposed to the stock flow of 195cc/min. The stock ECU can compensate for 8-10% and the 208s are @13% too big. Installed a set of stockers balanced at 188cc/min and we'll see how that goes. Might just change the O2 sensor for S&G.

New exhaust system, stock injectors, had the pipe sniffed and the idle HC is 7ppm and CO comes in at a whopping 0.00% with the 2500 RPM HC at 9ppm and the CO tips in at 0.00%. Now to find a test station next week and get my registation done.

I used to use heet when trying to help lower emissions numbers. Mix a gallon of heet (isopropyl alcohol) to about 6-7 gallons of gas. Helped a lot with HC’s

So, took this thing down to test. Idle HCs were at 100ppm and 2500rpm was 138ppm, CO zero either way. Kicker is it sat for more than an hour before they tested it and the engine and cat were NOT up to temp. Still passed. If they did the test right it would have run cleaner. Now I'm waiting for the tags.

Finally, got the tags! Driving my little commuter again. Now I get reminded of all the little things I have to do, like replace the driver side window regulator, and, oh yeah, brake master cylinder, idler arm...........  But at least it's on the road!

The LC exhaust is not as loud as I thought it might be. When at idle it's not really louder than the stock exhaust was. At cruise the same, don't need more volume from the radio and can have a normal level conversation, no highway drone to speak of. At full tilt (funny phrase when describing a stock 22RE, full tilt, HaHa) I don't think it hits a full 90db. I'm happy with it.
