Chain drive case strength??
« on: Jun 14, 2016, 08:45:41 PM »
Has anyone actually broke a Toyota chain drive t-case that was due it it's claimed weakness in design???? Anyone??? Hitting a rock and breaking the housing doesn't count, you can do that with most any aluminum t-case.

They look very stout when you tear one down.

The chain is around 2" wide and it utilizes an oil pump, & a planetary reduction unit.

I dont think I have even seen one break either, I have had a few mud boggers say that they broke a chain but I diddnt see it for myself.

So the dont seem as weak to me as people make them sound. Just my :twocents:

I was going to ask the same question but in mine I think my berrings are going out I have a pretty good noise when I'm doing over 40 and I take it out of gear put it into  neutral sketchy noise to say the least but I never herd of one blowing out I have a pretty good amount of what feels like slop in my rear drive line to when I let off the gas while driving in gear and I feel it jerk when I push the skinny pettle again help me lol it's a 91 runner 3.slow  :hammer:  :smack:

I just bought the adapter to bolt a chain drive to a gear drive crawl box. Been running duals with 2.28's but want something a little slower without going 4.7.

You can change the gear ration in the diffs as well.

Yep, I have one setup of 5.29's, just haven't bought the second setup. A chain drive appeals to me because its two different transfer case ratios without going to 4.7's which is to slow for what I wheel.

Front case is gear drive of course, rear case will be chain drive. Call Marlin and ask about this adapter, don't remember the price.

Or you have so many miles on the rig any t-case would be worn out. :)

I think proper maintenance is important as well. I know a guy who put 300k without ever changing gear oil... ANY OF IT...
30k miles... put some fresh fluid in it...
seriously, cost of fuel vs cost of gear oil....
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

This is in 4WD at 45mph? You feel slop or the slack when on and off the gas?

This is at 45mph in 4wd? You feel slop getting on and off the gas? Chain slop will only show up in 4wd, if this is there in 2wd then you better check the rest of the drivetrain, u-joints, rear diff. gear backlash.
