Hy Steer Questions
« on: Mar 27, 2005, 09:21:47 PM »
I was thinking about building my own drag link and tie rod with some leftover material my brother has given me from his Hy-steer buildup in his Jeep Wrangler.  It's the same tubing used (I think) in the kits that Marlin sells.  I've got quite a few questons.  My brother used some nice high quality hiem joints from QA1.  I was thinking of using the same ones.  He used some weld ins on his TR and DL rather than tapping them.

Do hiem joints have any pros and cons versus using FJ-80 toe rod ends?
What size and thread count are the FJ-80 Tie rod ends?
Can the Marlin steering arms be modified to run the hiem joints rather than the tie rod ends?

I know this is quite a few questions but I figured this would be the best place to ask.  I don't mind buying the hy-steer kit but I figured since I've got some of the materials to build it, if it would be worth my time and money to do so as well as being safe (drilling steering arms and stuff like that)

Thanks
Aaron

You can use heims on your tir rod ends with no worries..I don't see a problem with weld in bungs..They seem to work fine..You will have a problem using heims with the drag link though..Even with misalighnment bushings they don't have enough turn in them for flex and for the drop from steering box to axle..stay with the mini ends of fj80 end on that link..

Unfortunately I have allpoo histeer with heims.  I havent had any issues with the draglink limiting flex so far that I know of but then again Im on the inside of the truck when the suspension is twisted up.  If I was going to build my own I wouldnt mess with heims though, Id just use chevy 1/2 ton tierod ends.

Nope the draglink survived, the tierod is bent pretty good though.  I started to straighten it but it didnt wanna budge so Im just adjusting the toe and Ill leave it at that.

I actually think its the lack of dramatic draglink angle at ride height that saves the draglink.  If it was more than the current 3" height difference then it would probobly bind badly when drooping the driver front.

Thanks for the advice.  Anybody know if I will have to ream the steering arms out for the heim joints?

yes..You wil have to drill out the knuckle because you will use a bolt through there and not a taper like the tierod end has..
