Spring ID and other questions
« on: Dec 27, 2014, 07:28:43 AM »
Hey guys, I have recently obtained a complete front and rear set of solid axles, MC 4" springs, high steer, gears lockers and other stuff. It all came off a 91' pickup, front axle from a 84'.

Question is this, previous owner wasn't sure what the actual height of the lift kit was that he bought from MC however many years ago. The springs have TOY33 FRONT and TOY33 REAR printed on them. Is that enough to know what kit it was?

I have already done the rear leaf conversion and installed my V6 third in the housing, the rear seems to sit quite a bit lower than the front does, front is still IFS mind you. If the front sits considerably higher than the rear after I do the axle swap is it acceptable to just swap out the rear shackles for taller ones?

Thanks!

Yep, those are 4" springs. How long of a shackle are you using in the rear now? A longer shackle should be ok but for every inch longer you only get a 1/2" lift. I think some people also run a taller spring in the rear on the 4Runner, like 4" front with 5" rear.

My shackles are sitting at 40 degrees loaded. Will longer shackles change that? How long is too long?

I tend to think about things too much. I haven't even done the front yet so I don't even know if I will need to make an adjustment.

Thanks!

It's my understanding that a longer shackle reduces the angle, but I can't imagine an inch or two changing the shackle angle much. I have 6.5" (hole to hole) shackles on my pickup and personally wouldn't want much longer than that. Another side effect of longer shackles would be a pinion angle change. What length shackles do you have on the rear now? Blocks are another option. As much as I see people saying to stay away from blocks I sure do see a lot of rigs with them, especially people running chevy springs.

They are 6" eye to eye that are on the truck right now. Could I make some that are longer? Or would blocks be in order if need be?

You can throw a few more leaves in there too. I have like 8 leaves on my chevy rears on my 4runner and it still rides nice and flexes like mad. Actually I think I have 9 leaves on my passenger side.

You probably could add some kind of add a leaf, I wouldn't go with too short of a leaf though.

Spring ID and other questions

Here is how it sits now with the front and rear done.

Will adding a leaf in the rear make the ride stiffer?

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Ussualy adding a leaf will make it stiffer, but it will hold more weight. The shorter the leaf the stiffer it will be, that's why I would add a leaf similar in length to your middle ones. Might have to do a small block and a leaf. I'm not sure but if you start adding to many leafs to a lift spring you might sacrifice ride and flex.

I have like 9 leaves in my chevy 63" rears and it still rides smooth.  It's mostly longer leaves not a ton of short thick overloads though.

If you are running the factory e brake you'll be limited to how many leafs you can add before the cable won't fit over the springs. Adding more leafs works great, but it can be a guessing game
