Radiator shroud
« on: Jun 02, 2014, 09:16:49 AM »
I've got a 22re that's been overheating and one thing I don't have is a radiator shroud.  I've been told by someone that the fan is going to be basically useless without one.  Is that true?  I get that a shroud would help concentrate the air flow but is it definitely needed to keep it cool?  Also does anyone know the best place to get one?  Thanks!!

I'm sure the shroud helps but I have ran without them several times with no issues.  I would pick up a shroud off a wreck when you can but I'm guessing your real problem is something else.

Check the cheap stuff like coolant, thermostat, and timing first. You may also have a clogged radiator. Do a flush to see if you get improvement.

I just scored a shroud from a junk yard for 15 bucks. 12 bucks shipping.
If you see it, its for sale.

As far as I am concerned a shroud is very necessary. There is a reason the factory put one on. With a shroud the fan pulls air through the whole radiator, not just the spot where the fan is.

A fan without a shroud is like trying to blend cake mix on a plate, you need that bowl to keep stuff flying everywhere. Just like the mixer the fan without a shroud is just throwing air around inside the engine compartment since it is the easiest route for the air to go, instead having the shroud covering the fan which forces it to draw the air through the radiator.

Thanks for the input.  It does make sense to have a shroud - not sure that's the reason for overheating either but I'll keep my eye out for one.
