R151F worth the cost or better to dual a W56 ?
« on: Sep 03, 2005, 09:12:33 PM »
88 4Runner 22re. Marlin SAS in process with 35 Krawlers 5.29s and detroit rear. Currently the rig has the W56 trans and 21 spline t-case. Trans and case are in perfect condition

I have a spare R151F trans and 23-spline t-case. Needs a clutch.

Looking for your opinions on this
Buying a clutch and dual casing my 151 is to much $$ right now.
So my options are these:

1. Buy a clutch and run the 151 with case stock condition (with no dual set up).
2. Sell the 151 and 23 spline case and buy a dual case set-up and run the W56 set-up dual cased.

Is the 151 trans and 23 spline t-case really worth it ? Or is it just the ultimate over kill set-up and I would have been just fine with the W56 ?

My last rig was a 92 Runner 5-speed V6 with IFS. So this new rig will be completely different anyway, and I did not really break stuff on the IFS.
I dont feel I am hard on parts....yet
Just lookin for advise thanks

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

I am in a similar position, but wondering if I should keep my rigs or sell it all.  Anyway, here are my thoughts:

Take the clutch out of the equation.  If you need one, you need one, W56 or 151.  If you are planning to run the turbo flywheel and turbo clutch, then add it back in, that was not in your note.

Are you ever going to ask for more power than the 22RE?  4.3, 7M, 3RZ, etc?  If it is possible, then stay with the R151, and eventually buy a second 23-spline case.  The W56 will be challenged with 35" crawlers, more power, and 5th gear highway use.  My opinion only, other will have theirs.

Also, along those lines, what is your intended use for this?  How hardcore do you intend to get?  The more intense your journey, the stronger the tranny should be.  And don't forget the lower 1st gear...
