What Regulator to buy for DIY Air Tank????
« on: Nov 11, 2013, 02:00:01 PM »
I have a spare 20LB air tank that i want to make into a portable Air supply to air up tire when im on the trail.

Do you guys have a link or spec of what easy cheap regulator would work.  Nothing fancy just something to regulate pressure and i could hook up a quick connect to.

You can use an adjustable one form a standard air compressor, or a fixed psi inline one.

Why do you need to regulate it if you are just airing up a tire?
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

Because a co2 tank has like 800- 1200 PSI depending.  don’t think you would want that running direct.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone running it direct but i could be wrong.

I was thinking the same thing, that he was merely using an air tank, like ~180psi max air tank.

I have inflated my tires w/ my unregulated CO2 tank.  I wouldn't recommend it.  I'm looking at that fixed reg. mentioned.  100-150 PSI.  Is that safe for tires and will it still power my air tools?  Is it correct that a guage on the tank(not regulator) is useless on a CO2 bottle?

I have blown up a tire before and I got knocked on my ass.  Lucky I can still see and hear.

These regs will not adequately power air tools. My 100psi give me about two hits with my 1/2" impact. The issue is there is not enough volume coming thru the reg. But for tires, it works fantastic, better than my cheap adjustable reg. maybe the PowerTank's reg flows better but it's real money.

Yeah, I agree it’s nice for tires but not tools, you need a high $$ one for more flow but who has cash laying around to spend on that.

I picked up a new 10LB C02 bottel today from beverage company for 85 bucks with a handle.  Just need a cheap hose and I'm ready to go.

I like spending money on stuff that gets me over big rocks.

I have used my Power Tank to power 1/2 impacts, air ratchets and die grinders. Power Tank Steve has put a lot of time, money and effort into the design of his products. Yes they are costly but they also do what he says they will.

What if you guys place a 1 gallon air tank between the air tool and the regulated CO2 tank? Then you'd have a good volume of 100 psi air to work with

Ever heard of a pressure gauge? You use them to make sure you put the correct amount of pressure in the tire.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

That would work but that's a costly amount of CO2 every time you hook it up.

So put a valve on it, so it retains the gas in the buffer tank, after the tank before the hose, and the amount of co2 to turn into one gallon of gas is really not that much at all. 50 pounds turns into something like 480 CF
