I've surfed the web and haven't found anything like this.........
(Seems like a good idea..
)
I'm going to use some ascii art so here's what I'm using for various parts in a driveshaft:
Flange |
U-joint x
Shaft ===
slip-joint ==----===
Double-cardan joint (CV) xx
fusable driveshaft # (
http://www.sonnax.com/product-lines/power-train-savers)
I'm calling it a modular driveshaft because the various pieces will have flanges on them rather than being welded to the driveshaft for ease of swapping and/or changing things....
Standard driveshaft looks like this
|x====---=====x|
Break a u-joint off-road, and you have the fun of fixing it...
So you change the standard driveshaft to 3 pieces
|x| |====---=====| |x| Break a u-joint and you just bolt in your spare |x| (u-joint) (or steal the front u-joint to get home)
Double cardan driveshaft
|xx====---=====x| becomes |xx| |====---=====| |x|
Driveshaft too short |====---=====| just add a small driveshaft |==| |====---=====|
Want a fusible driveshaft just add a small fusible section like you're extending the driveshaft.
|#| |====---=====|
Want to eventually have a double transfer case; Make the rear shaft as a short (6" or so shaft) plus a long shaft. When you add the doubler, move the short shaft to the front driveshaft.
You're breaking u-joints. Just upgrade the |x| or |xx| joints.
Twisting shafts. Just upgrade the shaft.
Want an axle disconnect or axle brake..... Just add a section with those features
