transmission: second opinion
« on: May 24, 2013, 11:43:42 AM »
I think I have a transmission on the way out. For a while now I've noticed some vibration in the transmission shifter knob. It was never that bad but always in the back of my mind. Moving forward, last sunday we packed the 4Runner for moab and headed out immediately noticed a stronger vibration. I chocked it up to the tires having sat for a few weeks. We stopped for coffee in woodland park and I was doing a walk around and rocked the truck and heard some clinking coming from somewhere around mid transmission. So we decided to head back to check things out. While driving around at home with the truck unloaded I noticed that I could feel a strong fast vibration in the transmission stick, similar to when a bearing is going out. When holding the t-case stick you could still feel some vibration but much less.

When I got back to the house, I pulled the drain plug on the transmission. The fluid came out dirty, but nothing out of the ordinary. Looked at the magnet in the drain plug, definitely some metal enough to create a small dome. Not great, not bad. I decided to go ahead and pull the tranny. When I got it out, went ahead and pulled the rear half of the case off. I found a little more grit but again nothing screaming a problem. When looking at the gears however there are some worrying signs. 3rd and 4th have some uneven wear and chipped gear teeth. I'm also seeing 5th with some significant chipping. Additionally, when turning the input shaft there does seam to be some bearing wear further inside the front half of the case.

I also took a look at the clutch pilot bearing. Which turned out to be bad, which is especially bad news because that bearing only has a couple thousand on it.

So I'm looking for a second opinion. Is this transmission done? Can it be pushed until the fall? What are some other thoughts?

Usually it's the bearings that wear out.

Chips on the end of the tooth usually don't matter because there never is any contact there.

I just polished them smooth with a dremel so that there can't be any propagation.

Is that a reflection or large chip on your R(actual 1) picture?

You've labeled the gears wrong.

That's not Reverse and 5, but 1 & 2.

3 and 4 are 4 & 3.

Reverse and 5 are on the other side, and R is usually straight cut.

If you're looking almost at the center of the pic, that should just be a reflection.

As far as the labeling, what you described would make more sense. This is the first time I've opened up a transmission. So I was going based off moving the stick and looking to see which collars moved where.

Moving forward, I pulled the other half of the case off. More of the same except now I can move the lower shaft. (I believe it's called the counter shaft) 1/4" side to side. I'm looking in the FSM now to find out what spec is but it seams like an awful lot.
