how do you ID a transmission?

I'm trying to rebuild my transmission but I'm not sure what it is, i have looked at pictures of them on MC but i cant tell what one i have. is there any way to tell what you have? its not the stock on to my truck so my Vin does not help at all.

One way to help the process of elimination is to identify your shifters. Is it a forward shift or top shift? 2wd or 4wd? The w series trans has four almost sheet metal screws that hold the actual shifter into the base. Also try and post a link with a picture of ur trans. Ive been told that the g series internals are interchangeable other than maybe the bearings...but then again the only difference with the g sereis may b the bearings....hope it helps a little...

its a top shift and 4wd

W56-A or B. unless your truck is a V6.

Probably a g series..pretty common.
