dragging a house....
« on: Jun 10, 2002, 07:56:41 AM »
Hey all, ok first off, I have a 1985 4x4 p/u R151F 5 speed 22RE. I put the marlin clutch *(HD)* in recently and I still have to work out the pedal feel that I want but I seem to have developed a problem, I was driving the truck this weekend and when going up a hill *dogging* the motor a bit I started to hear a nasty whinning noise *(kinda sounded like bearing going bad)* As soon as I got to the top of the hill or I down shifted I could no longer hear it. *(I hear it mostly in 4th and 5th)* Anyways then I was driving on level ground in 4th gear *(heard the whinning noise again)* and the truck felt as though it was pulling a house, had very little power and when I pushed on the gas even harder it only dogged out more, this happened for a few min and seemed to have let up alittle bit, but it still feels as though something is either dragging or holding it back. I noticed this really when I first installed everything but it seems to have gotten worse. Any ideas of what my issues might be *(clutch, bearings, ?)*

Thanks,
Brian "ROGUEDOGG" Ford

Is your 4-banger EFI or Carb?

Check spark plugs / wires / air box / TPS / Distributor Cap / Fuel Filter / Injectors / Float Level / Jets / etc.

Try to keep drivetrain out of your mind. The strange noise could be related to your intake plumbing or a vacuum leak, or an exhaust leak, or a loose timing chain, or loose valves, etc.

It is rare for a drivetrain related problem to give a feeling of a lack of power, unless of course it is a very, very serious problem, like a siezed up wheel cylinder or something  :ack:

Good luck,
BigMike

22RE bro, the only reason I assumed right away it was related to the driveline was because I have never had an issue with the truck untill this swap and now all this. I did nothing to the motor or even remotely disconnected anything other than the battery for when I was messing with the (N) safety switch deal. When on level ground and in (N) you should beable to get under the truck and spin the driveshaft with a fair amount of ease and the truck will move *(I have done this in the past when changing my u-joints)* Now it's like I have the e-brake on half way and it's all I can do to spin the sucker. Just thought I'd toss that lil` tid bit in there.

thanks...BM
