22RE Oil Pressure Sender
« on: Mar 05, 2005, 09:29:03 AM »
Whats the best way to get at the oil sender on the 22re?  Can it be reached from the top, it looks kinda tight.  Can it be easily done by removing the inner fender and going in from the side?  Any help would be great, I finally have a nice day to work on the truck, thanks!

The SR5 style oil sender seems to have a different style of connection than the stock warning light sender.  So how does the wire from the smaller one connect to the bigger SR5 sender, it doesn't have a blade connector like my stock one.

There are two different types of senders.

The one that mounts behind the passengers side engine mount is the low pressure open/closed switch that operates the oil press. warning light, and the larger round sender is the one that operates the gauge.

To remove the larger one, I would advise using I believe a 12mm wrench to remove it properly from below the larger diameter where the 12mm flats are. Some people use large wrenches on the outter dia. of the sender and it destroys them.

How about the smaller one?  Can I just put a socket on it to remove it?  It looks like it has a 6 sides to it.  Finally, about the wire connector, the 2 senders look to have different style of connecting the wire.  The one on my truck is like a blade connector, like the smaller sender has.  So how do I get the wire to clip onto the larger sender, since it seems to lack any kind of wire connector that I'm familiar with?  Thanks again!

Yes, you can use a regular wrench or socket to remove the smaller "switch" sender, but I do not know what size it is.

For the larger sender, you can just use a regular crimped end, like C5 in this picture:

I had to do this with my 3RZ since it's engine harness used a totally different style plug, so I cut it off and just used a crimp just like C5 above.

OK, thnaks a lot, BigMike!  Do I have to worry about a boot or anything once I swap senders?  Looks like hte switch sender boot won't fit the gauge sender.

Right, I just left my crimp bare and exposed. To ensure that it never falls off, please use some pliers and gently collapse the crimp just a bit more so it goes on tighter. The crimp I had actually has kind of a relief at its center, so it actually "snaps-on" like it was meant for the job. It goes on hard, but then it can rotate and move freely, and is equally hard to remove.

There is nothing remotely near my oil pressure sender, its right out in the open, so I was not concerned about insulation. If the wire is grounded directly, then after about 15 seconds, you will fry your gauge. If you have time you might consider running out to your local wrecking yard and hit up a bunch of mid-80's Celicas with a 22RE. They have the same sender, and hopefully you can find the nice stock black sock boot that covers the entire sending unit.

Have fun!

While you are out at the wrecking yard looking for the boot, keep an eye out for the adapter harness.  I've ssen it on a few rigs, mainly earlier trucks.  It has the spage connector on one end and the funky round end on the other.  Its about six inches long.  You plug one end into the harness and the other end onto the gauge sender.

Do you guys think that the boot or adapter wire would be parts that you could find at an auto parts store?  That would sure make life easier!  The closest wrecking yard that would have what I need is like an hour and a half away.  Not much of a problem, but I'd have to wait til next saturday.

Maybe I'll just make my own adapter out of a short length of wire.  It'd be easier to do that than try to crimp a new end on the existing wire while it's in the truck.  Is the blade on the switch oil sender anything special or is it just a standard blade like C7 in the picture above?  Any specific wire gauge?  It looks pretty thin on the truck.

No, its just a regular universal blade. I believe the wires are 16 or 18 gauge, but that doesnt really help you

Naw that helps a little.  I went out to Radio shack and made an adapter.  Got some male and female insulated blade connectors, crimped 'em on a 6 inch length of 16 or 18 gauge wire.  I wanted to at least closely match the wire sizes, and I think I got close.  Looks like it's gonna work great, all I need now is some nice weather......

Thanks for all your help!

That's perfect. Even the modified insulation is a great idea.
