R151 stuck in second
« on: Mar 26, 2013, 10:40:43 AM »
I've come across an r151 trans, I'm told it didn't have 1st gear, later it got stuck in second and the shifter doesn't work. You can move the shifter, there is no resistance, and it doesn't do anything to shift. It's stuck in second.

What's up?

You might have to pull it apart and take a look. Any metal coming out with the oil? Did someone have it apart?

Even if the gears are shot you can still swap your bell housing and tail housing on to a pre 95 R150F trans. The guts are all the same except 1st and 2nd gear ratios.

I didn't like the lower gears on the street and swapped in a R150F gear set. I may stick the lower ones back in since my truck is no longer a daily driver.

There is also some posts out there about "lightly" dropping the trans (bell housing end) on the floor when it gets stuck like that. Something gets locked up and that unsticks it. Never did it myself though.

I can send you a pdf of the FSM for that trans.

Here's what you'll see when you pull the case off.

Cool, thanks. Ill have to tear into it if I buy it and see whats up. I like this trans combined with a single re-geared t-case. Simple and strong.
