« on: Jun 10, 2012, 10:47:59 PM »
just picked up a 93 toyota pickup 22re when the motor is cool it ideals high like 1500-1800 and while im driveing, inbetween shifting it takes half a second or so for the rpms to start dropping back down. but when the motor gets warmed up its runs fine ideals at 850. was thinking tps what do you guys think

This sounds like normal operation. Typically a motor will idle high till its warmed up then go to normal. Maybe not 1800 rpm's high. If you want to bring the idle down a bit adjust the idle mixture screw. (Big screw on the left top of throttle body opening.) It may also be the cold start injector. I'm not sure quite how that works.

I have a question in regards to the same area. I cannot get my 22RE to idle below 1200 RPM’s with out retarding my timing so bad that I have no power and the motor pings real bad. My idle mixture screw is turned all the way in; throttle stop screw is not touching a thing. I’m going to play with the TPS tonight. From what I’ve read it seems to be working. I’ve done the jumper wire timing adjusting technique and the idle does goes down with the jumper wire. I’m hoping its out of adjustment. Any ideas?

Thorn4run,

What year 22RE?

Earlier versions have an aux air valve that keeps the idle up for cold running.   When they break, the idle stays high.

My 22RE is a '88. You have my attention! Tell me more. Where can I find this aux air valve? I'm sure I've had it in my hand before but never knew what it was. Is that the thing under the intake that has coolant hoses, electrical and vacuum hoses running to it? I just got done doing a complete teardown rebuild on the motor. Everything has been replaced other than sensors and emission stuff, you know the $300 parts that only make the motor run funny when they don’t work.

Looks like this:

It's under and slightly behind the throttle body

83yota5960,

A gummed up throttle body, or the dashpot (does a 93 have a dashpot?) isn't working correctly.

Sorry 83yota5960, I wasn't trying to steel you thread.

I have an intake off of a '94 and it has a dashpot. It looks self-contained as the one on my '88 has a vacuum hose and filter on it. I do believe if the dashpot is working you will see it slowly compress when the throttle adjustment screw makes contact with the plunger on it.
