Need opinions on locker!!
« on: Nov 25, 2012, 11:15:49 AM »
So i have plans on getting either a detroit or aussie locker to run in the rear. for the front im looking at the true trac limited slip. any opinions/ experience with one of these? how well do they lock up? are they strong? this is gonna be on my DD with 35s. i plan on running stock axle shafts in the front for now so thats why im looking at the true trac. are they safe to run with stock axles?? :eyebrow:

I run spartans front and rear which use the same concept as a detroit. Off road i think they're the absolute best upgrade i love em. The only problem i ran into was when turning it'll chirp my tires in the rear and loud hard popping noises that would cause everyone to look. The way i fixed that was use Lucas 85w-140 heavy duty high performance differential oil and i never have any problems anymore.

Arguable, I'd look for a full case locker like a Detroit or grizzly for the rear. Limited slip up front is one and will help save your axles, but look for one out of a supra irs (I believe) as they could be cheaper.

My truck had Tru-Trac's in both axles when I bought it. Worked great on snowy roads and in sand. Sucked for rock crawling.

I put an Aussie in the rear of my son's truck and his truck out crawled mine even with his open front diff.

I'm now running Aussies in both axles and they work great.

A full case locker like a Detroit was out of my budget. I got two Aussies for less. I'm only running 35's so no problems so far.

You won't have an issue breaking birfs. I'm running a lock right in my v6 carrier in the front and it's been fine for 4 years. Last gear install I inspected it and it still looks new.

Turning will suck unless you have ha or twin sticks

Let me rephrase, you'll break the birf first before the lock right/Aussie. Stock birfs you will probably break them

Yes you will brake stock birfs, unless you turn out your steering stops a little bit. Steering is fine with a front locker except if you're going down hill and turning, then it sucks.

Even with a stock open front diff, you have more steering effort when you are in 4wd. It is slightly more noticeable with the Tru-Trac and the Aussie.

I'm in Az desert terrain so usually some loose dirt, rocks under my tires. I haven't experienced the horrible steering some people report. I'm running Dirty 30's also. I was told I WILL break stock birfs with 35's and bigger. Didn't want to go down that road. Also twin stick.
