89 22re running problem-
« on: Apr 26, 2012, 03:28:47 PM »
so i searched for this but didnt really find what i was looking for. i just picked up an 89 pick-up that needed a fuel pump. so i put i fuel pump in it. so i went to start it and it fired right up and run fine for about 20 seconds. so i tried starting again and agian and the same thing happens. wondering what would be the right direction to go in?

Did you determine that it needed a fuel pump, or is that what the previous owner told you?
Does the '85 pump cycle on/off when testing it?

yes the old one wouldn't work. it was locked up and full of rust when i took it out. the fuel pump i put in it was brand new. i cracked the fuel line at the intake to make sure it was working and seemed to have plenty of pressure. i even by passed the pump to charger so it always stayed on. same problem so i know it isn't a relay

If it will run correctly for 20 seconds then cut out, it could be the fuel filter.

yea it could be but i cracked the fuel line on the plenum and it seemed to have plenty of pressure. I'm thinking maybe ignition problem.

Is the intake tube on? If not the MAF sensor will not work and the fuel pump will cut off like you said it does. But, you said you jumpered the pump to run continuous..........hmmm.  Any codes?

It may not be the problem but, you should change your fuel filter like Snowtoy mentioned. If the pump was full of rust, the filter probably is too.

With the fuel filter I was thinking it might be allowing enough fuel to pass through it during the start-up phase, but once running if it was partially clogged it might not be flowing enough to run the engine.  However if you can get a strong continuous flow for more than 20 seconds at the intake, the filter wouldn't be the issue.

The ignition might be the problem, but ignition issues usually prevent the engine from starting up.

For the 20 seconds it does run, does it run strong, can you rev the engine and have it respond?

Have you checked for any engine codes?

Do you know if there is any type anti-theft devices on it?  There are some that allow the vehicle to run for a 30 seconds before shutting the engine off.

my guess would have been fuel pump relay but looks like you've gotten passed that

the MAF sensor was stuck but I freed it open and seems to work fine. I'm going to get a fuel filter tomorrow and put that in. it might be plugged with rust. it would run fine if revved slow but if you went to hold it wide open it would cut out. hopefully the filter is the problem. i probably should have tried that first but we will see what happens.

my old truck did the same thing. It was only running for a few seconds using the cold start injector. I did a oms test on the main injector harness and it turns out that the harness splits in a "Y" to go to to injectors that Y was corroded and i had to solder it back together. hope this hepls
:) nothing worth wheeling other than a YOTA :)
