Valve cover fitment.
« on: May 05, 2012, 09:05:56 PM »
I blew a head gasket on my 22re, with a LCE big bore kit and high lift cam. To fix the problem i got a MLS gasket and an ARP head stud kit. After a very light cut on the head, because the MLS gasket requires a very smooth surface, everything went together nicely until i started it and oil was leaking from the valve cover .
So I removed the cover and it was hitting on the ARP studs just before the gasket started to compress. I had 3 options, clearance the top of the studs , clearance the valve cover , or see if a 20r cover clears. The 20r cover fit and i ran the engine for at least 30 minutes while tuning. :)

Really?  I put a bigger cam in my 20r head and the rocker arms kiss the inside of the valve cover  :dunno:

Interesting, I was under the impression that the 22R cover was taller.

It is taller, but the 20r is flat under the top of the cover and the 22r has a casting bump. The R&D department of ARP have heard of this problem and are coming out with a new instruction saying to remove the bumps if they hit the studs. I guess it depends on the amount of materiel removed on the head and the thickness of the head gasket.
