22RE's use it. Senses engine knock like from bad gas or too much timing advance. ECM will then retard ignition timing. Mine will give a code and check engine light comes on.

Usually screws into a threaded hole in block near oil pressure sender.

Location(pic from the web):

The ecu needs to receive a signal from the KS above about 2k rpms, w/o receiving the signal, the ecu will go into "safe mode" to prevent engine damage.  This safe mode will reduce performance and likely drop fuel economy as well.  Is there a spot cast in the block for the KS, that you can drill and tap?

LC Engineering has a page somwhere on it's site where it shows a way to relocate the sensor for performance reasons.

I did this by drilling per their instructions. It's been a while so I don't remember the details. I think it was one of the unused engine mount bosses?  I do remember it was easy to do.

Need it for sure.  Computer does all kinds things that will drive you crazy when not working or bad connection.  There are a few modification guides on yota tech if you search there.

You have a 22r carb motor or a 22re motor with an older 22r block which has no spot for the sensor?

W/o a knock sensor it will trip a code and go to fail safe which enriches fuel mixture causing poor mileage.   Use it.
