H55 Toybox
« on: Jun 07, 2008, 08:05:12 PM »
Hey Guys,

I've been doing some reading in the forum on the toybox install behind the H55,but not much info.
I want to do this conversion, but my main concern is the fit of the adapter to the H55 output shaft.
One guy said after he cut the output shaft, the marlin 35mm adapter wouldn't fit over the output shaft because the output shaft was bigger than 35mm.So he ended up grinding down the spline on the output shaft to make the marlin adapter fit!! It looked pretty brutal :o.

Just wondering if anyone else has had to do this with the H55? Or was it just an anomoly with that one guy.

Anyone else with experience on this kit, please share your knowledge.

Thanks.

check on nfcruiserheads.org. Flcruiser did this conversion and despite the trouble he is really happy. He has put alot of miles in the short time he has had it and tellico tested it. Look under "al and steves toybox" thread.

I chopped and pre fit mine today. Very snug but no problem. Unfortunately I'm missing the pinch collar so I didn't make too much progress. I'll have to get on the horn for a one of those on Monday. The good news is they have machined the adapter better and how there is no problem with fifth gear engaging. My first adapter needed a little work in that department. I'm taking photos as I go this time so once I'm done I can document a report for y'all.

Hey guy's thanks for the replies!  This is helpful for anyone else thinking about the H55/toybox swap.

Turnmeover, sorry,my mistake, your second link put me in the right spot, although my starting post on this thread was refering to steve having to grind his output shaft to make the toybox fit.

Lowenbrau,a report on your install when you do it would be great.

Calicruiser, very nice fabrication work, but didn't read anything in your thread about the H55/toybox fit.(assuming no issues)

Wondering how many more guys have had steves problems or no problems?

good stuff..keep the write-ups comin' guys. :beerchug:

Sorry for the slow response time. I tried to put it together myself but failed. I ended up getting in contact with Marlin and he put it together for me. My output shaft was to big for the input gear so that needed to be ground down. My front adapter was not machined enough for clearance of the 5th gear shift rail. I can say that Marlin is aware of the few lingering issues that I am sure are already corrected. PM me if you have any specific questions.

Ive done the conversion to a H55F in a HZJ75 series here in Australia. It was a bit of a mission but all in all not too bad.

I sent is a whole load of pics and a install walkthrough to MC at the start of the year but have heard nothing back..

I've installed a Toybox on an H55 in in my 1980 HJ45 Troopy.  The install is pretty straightforward for an H55 or the H42 with the extension housing like the ones used in the Fj/HJ60 series.  You need to shorten the transmission output shaft.  Measure and cut with a zip disc.  There are some threads on ih8mud.com with photos.  Photos of y install can be found here

Cut my H55 output shaft with a zip disk as well, i used a length of emery cloth to down size the now stubby shaft to fit the adapter. From what i had read in various threads i thought it would take more effort to get it to fit, not so for mine.

WHICH Toybox do you buy? Marlin still doesnt list any that match up with the H55 on his site.
