Tube chassis project...
« on: Mar 24, 2005, 08:02:23 AM »
I want to start buying up parts to start my tube chassis project. It will be quite a while before I actually get to build the thing but I never the less want to start putting together a game plan on what parts to start hunting.

My question is this. It will be a 2 seater truggy with 404 portals, coilovers, and either 37 or 39.5 tires (no bigger) I am determined to keep a Toyota engine / trans / t case in it and not drop a small block or 4.3 in it.

It must have an automatic transmission so I'm considering the 3400 Toyota motor and trans/ t case combo. Because of the crazy gearing in the Mog diffs and the fact that Mog fronts are Drivers side drop I will want to run a 2:1 Atlas (selectable outputs)  mated to the stock Toy T case. The 2:1 combined with the axle ratio in the Mog (7.56:1) Should give me low gears but adequate wheel spin if I need to power up something. The extra stock T case should give me a really good crawl ratio if I need to crawl.

So far this seems like a good combo but I just have no experience with the a340 trans that's behind the 3400 off-road... Are these transmissions stout enough to take some good abuse? I ask because I've been wanting a automatic behind my 5M in my 4runner forever but keep being told that the old Toyota automatics are no good for rock crawling.

Is there an adapter to link the Atlas to the a340 trans / t case?

You guys give me some input on what you think would be a good strong tranny option. I want it to be 6 cyl.
