Starting Issues with 1981 Toy Pickup W/ 22R
« on: Oct 18, 2011, 08:25:47 AM »
This may be a borderline newbie tech question but I put it here anyway.  I have a 1981 Toyota reg cab pickup w/ 22R.  When I go to start the truck I just get a “click” (single click) and there is no turn over of the engine at all or cranking.  If I keep turning the key over eventually the truck will start normally, however it takes about ten rotations of the key to make this happen and that number is increasing.  Any idea on what needs to be replaced/repaired? I am sure that there is a simple answer to this question but I am technically challenged so I thought I would ask the board.  Thanks

Its a stuck starter relay.  You need a new starter.  If you want to just get it to start you can tap the starter relay and it will start up every time but eventually it wont work.
I have a few stock starters here. You can get one for 20.00 bucks.  All work perfect.

Starter for sure , trick sometimes is tap a hammer on the starter
Then turn it over , or hit with a hammer while trying to start the truck
But for sure , starter is old!

Could also be a worn out ignition switch, I had this happen on my 80 and a couple of my Samurai's I just wired an auxillary light relay into the system and it cured the low voltage from the switch. I did all of what was suggested above before tracing it to the switch.

Had a similar problem and replaced starter but it did not solve the problem. Then I replaced battery cables and checked grounds. Started but problem returned. I finally put in a painless hot shot relay. Easy to install and have not had a problem since. here is the link to the article I read before getting the relay kit. http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml#OtherOptions

Put new contacts in it.
I did the same thing on my 83. $7.00 and pretty simple to do.
A real man builds it... Then his wife points out all that he did wrong.
