I don't know too much, but i think a towing cam would be good :) because those have a lot of lower end torque obviously for towing :)
It sounds like it probably hauls pretty good right now.

you can take off the fan and put in an electric fan.  that gave me a little bit.
anything else would probabley cost a lot.(turbos,etc.)
i'd keep the cam small though.  bigger cams tend to drop low end and gain top end power.  there is only so much you can expect from a 4 cylinder with 96 hp stock.  if you do get a cam i would highly recommend taking the head down and having it ported by a shop with a flow bench.  "horsepower is in the head."  you can also get bigger valves that's more power with out the low end robing overlap of an after market cam.  also more compression gives more torque,(the last higher compression pistons i saw were over 600 bucks though.)  if you have the head milled down remember to check the cam timing during reasembley.  hope it helps. :)

your opening up a real can of worms. The first thing do you have the taco engine? If you look at, It's opposite of the older toyota engines. Fuel systems and exhaust systems. The second thing is do you have all the accessories?? computer, wiring harness, fuel tank, fuel lines ext, ext, ext. I don't know what your mechanical abilities are, but it's alot of work.  I'm presently working an 82 toy and puting in an 86 turbo fuel injected engine. I have the whole truck  to work with. So I have all the smog parts. That is another major consideration. The second part of your question is about smog legal parts.  If you want some more power, and want to keep your stock engine. You can add a smog legal header, 2nd put a larger exhasut system on. The stock exhaust is pretty restrictive. The next thing you can do is get rid of the stock ignitor box and coil and put in a MSD ignition system. It's smog legal and gives you more spark for you engine. I almost forgot how tired is the engine? If you want to go mildly wild. You can put on a 20r head on the 22r block. This will raise you compression ratio to 10:1 with stock pistons. Then just add a mild cam, for low end torque, header, and a 38mm carb. You will be pushing around 125 to 150 h/p at  flywheel. depending to tune up and carb jetting. There is a world of possibilities out there. This is just a few. I hope it helped.
