Questions on swapping in a 700R4 tranny in my 87
« on: Sep 17, 2002, 09:30:59 AM »
I am considering swapping in a 700R4 tranny in my 87 22RE/T. I would keep the stock automatic but I wanna run dual tcases. What all do I need to complete this swap? I may try to do it with a few friends. How hard is the swap?  Would swapping in a 5spd be harder? If not I may try the 5spd swap. With the 700R4 can I run dual 4.7s? I'm kinda new to 87 4Runner parts so bare with me. Also would you suggest a different tranny or ago about a this a different way?? Thanks in advance. Feel free to say whatever to help point me in the right direction.

I wouldn't do the 700r4 unless you do a 4.3

I was pretty sure you could put duals behind an auto?

Yes Eric just did a 4.3 700R4, Dual case in his 87 Mini.

I would go with the 5 speed swap for the fact that if your starter goes out you can push or pull start it. Got me home from Colorado once like that.

If you do a 4.3 then I would say go with the 700R4 since you can do it with only the Tcase adapter. However since you have an auto you got a chain drive Tcase. That will need to be swapped also if you want 4.7 gears

Start looking for a Turbo 5speed and case. The swap has been done before.

Thanks Paul, I will look into swapping in a 5spd. I just thought it would be a lot harder then a auto tranny. I know I would have to get another tcase, since the AT and tcase is one piece. What all parts are needed to do a 5spd swap and how hard is it? Could it be done with a few mechanielly inclined people? I was told the swap wasnt to hard. I was thinkin if I do the 5spd swap, I would go ahead and buy the tranny, dual tcases, etc. I was also considering goin ahead and buying the fully built tranny w/ dual tcases and 4.7 gear set. How much would that run for whoever knows?

You will need the pedels and Clutch master. Run a line from the Master to the slave. Flywheel, New console and shift boot setup, and your in buisness. All the holes should be there, or markings to do it in the right spot. You may need all the pedels, or just the clutch. I havn't looked at how mine is set up.

Best bet would be to get all the parts off the same truck, then you will see how it goes together. The hard part is finding the Turbo Trans setup. The last one I saw for sale was $900 for Trans and Tcase. And that was one Marlin rebuilt. I think Eric sold his for $500 without the case.

You could go with a W56 but then you will loose the low first gear. This is needed for street driving due to turbo lag.

I don't know much about the R150, other than you can rebuild it ith lower gears.
