Limiting a IFS steering box
« on: Aug 09, 2011, 09:01:38 PM »
Has anyone seen this anywhere? My steering box, ~94 IFS off a 4x4 runner v6, has about 1/4" more movement than my axle steering. Its putting a lot of stress on everything, you can see it tweeking my frame. I just did hydro so I'd like to see everything working together smoothly. My ram has 5.25" of stroke and that's what my axle has.

I currently have a flat pitman arm from Sky Manaf. Does anyone know the lengths of some other pitman arms? Maybe I could do some math..., or one of the engineers on here can :) , to figure out what radius arm I would need to use to limit the arc by 1/4" on each side.  :beerchug:

don't steer it bump to bump.  mine is the same way.  if i remember right, the 89 to 95 steering boxes that have the allen head on top that you have to gut when doind hydro assist have more swing than the 86-88's.  I might be wrong.  but i'm pretty sure thats what it is.  My steering box is off a 93 3.o 4runner and steers past my bumps, but i just always remember not to steer to where it hitsthe bumps.

There is no way that I know of to limit the steering box.

Your ram should be what limits your steering not the steering stops.

If the steering comes up againest the stops and there is still travel in the ram it is very hard on the steering knuckle studs, limit the ram.

The ram I have has a 5.25" stroke. My steering from stop to stop is 5.25" but I may back off the stops a tad to have a 1/16 of give on either side. The box is what's giving me issues. The steering hits the stops, the ram limits out, but the box keeps pushing. I need to limit the box somehow. Knowing not to steer all the way to the stops isn't going to stop me from doing it :p

I don't know if this makes a difference but the flat pitman arms are shorter than regular

Well that settles that, guess I'm already running a shorter pitman :(

yea what OOPS said,  you could always put a limiter on the ram itself just to where it touch's the "steering stops" on the axle.

Does the steering box do it both ways?

When you set the steering up, did you have the front wheels pointed straight ahead?

Did you center the steering box then adjust the drag link to the pitman arm?

If that is all yes, then you need a shorter pitman arm, sector hole to drag link hole.

You could also maybe take the box apart and put a small weld on the last teeth on the gear on the selector shaft and grind to get the results you want. In theroy it should work, but I do not know if I am missing something. It has been a few years since I had a box apart.

Both good ideas Oops. The weld idea would work but and was leaning towards the shorter pitman. Less hastle getting it right and I'm not sure how the sector shaft or the worm drive get would hold up after being welded :dunno: Thou it would only be on the outer teeth :) pain in the ars to get those numbers right :P

It does this in both directions and I have everything centered.
