R151f to replace W56 trans
« on: Sep 04, 2002, 05:20:15 AM »
If I replace my W56 trans with one from a turbo, the R151f will it bolt right to my dual cases or will I have to change input shafts on the cases or output shafts on the trans??

thanks

I think you're going to have spline issues...

although don't trust my advice, I don't know much about the R151 except that I want one.      :headshake:

You must use the Turbo bellhousing and clutch parts also.

You also need to run a 23 spline input gear and convert you front top shift case to a forward shift

OK, I'm reviving the topic because I actually found a turbo tranny finally :)

What parts do I need to convert the front top shift case to a forward shift?

Do the shifters come up in the same place for the trans and t cases?  I'm running Inchworm's crawler in a 4runner...here's a pic:

Nope, if you don't convert to forward shift then just make a plate for the hole in the turbo tranny and RTV it for a good seal...(directly from marlin)

For what it's worth, I couldn't afford a Turbo at the time.  So Marlin  set me up with a G-54 instead of W-56 with dual cases.  Why I asked, knowing that the w-56 was stronger?  Marlin explained, that the tranny shifters are in two different area's.  The w-56 is back more on the transmission. When It came time to put my Turbo in, the holes for all the shifters would line up ( he also threw in 23 spline in both cases  HE'IS GOD!!!)  Sounds crazy but Marlin said all EFI W-56's went in bucket or bucket like seats, but all Turbo's R150f went into bench seats, this made the difference on where the tranny shifter  and t-case shifter was.

So the only reason to keep a forward shift is to retain the stock shifter locations and holes right?

Also, are Turbo flywheels easy to come across? Can a V6 flywheel be used with a turbo trans? ??? ???

Might as well keep the the #1 t-case shifter where it is, but I do think it is easier to make it forward shifting just for the sake of using stock rubber boot's.

You can use any flywheel (but the v-6) in there.  Call Marlin if you need a turbo flywheel (get a turbo clutch also, stronger than a centerforce) I think I paid something like $250 all together (not very sure though?) He even surfaced it for me.

V-6 flywheel's I believe cannot be used in a 4-popper, something to do with starter positions and width???

OK, this was never really answered...If I leave my cases as top shift style they will come up in the same spot correct??  How about the tranny shifter??  Will it need to be modified or moved to come up in the stock W56 location?

COME AWN!!  Thanks :)

Is the trans shifter for a R151F located in the same spot the trans shifter for a W56 is?

No!  The turbo is in the same position as the g-54.  THe W-56 tranny shifter is (I believe) further down the line.  If you have both trannies measure from the edge of the bellhousing to center of shifter.

Your t-case shifters will be in the same spot, if you retain them the same as before the tranny swap.  G54's, W56's
and Turbo's all are the same length tranny (don't quote me)

You might want to call Marlin (it always good having GOD! answer your questions)
