bouncing speedo
« on: Oct 04, 2010, 11:17:09 PM »
What would cause a speedo to bounce?  i have a 95 4runner with a later gear drive t-case and the speedo will bounce 5 to 10 mph. it is also reading way faster that i am going. are there diffrent speedo gears for diffrent years?

thanks for the help

Well how many miles are on ur rig? I just put a 4.7 into my t-case and the case has roughly 230k, when i pulled the speedo sender out i noticed there were almost no spline left only slivers on a few of them. so u may need a new sender also the plastic splines were warped so im sure this is why my speedocable broke, just my  :twocents: tho, GL

Bouncing speedo, I had that happen and soon after the cable broke. It was binding up from a burr in the housing.

The bouncing speedo is from the speedo cable binding up.  I've had some luck fixing it on a few trucks by removing it at both ends and having a friend turn the trans end with it in a drill, while I spray some penetrating lube down the dash side of it.

Yes, there are differend gear sizes for the speedometer gears.  I think it all depended on what size R&P the rig came with.  I believe the speedo gears have the number of teath on the edge of them.  See if your local Toyota dealer can hook you up with the right one.

If your 4runner came with a 4:30 R&P, you might want to change the speedo gear to an older truck who's lowest R&P ratio is a 4:10.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure his 95 year 4runner has an electronic
Speedometer. There is no cable, just a speed sensor on the right
side of the transfer case near the output shaft.

This has a 4 wire connector, 2 go to the computer, 2 to the speedo.

I have had good luck removing the sensor and gear unit, cleaning the sensor portion
With electrical cleaner and replacing all the o-rings on the unit and cleaning
The contacts on the plug.

The sensor itself rarley will fail as it has no moving parts (sensor itself)
Normally they fail if the rubber membrane that seals it leaks trans fluid inside.

Often when u remove it you will find that the o-rings have been leaking and "can" cause
issues with the magnetic hall sensor accurately sensing the revolutions and can result in issues.

Other issues could be:
-the gear is damaged, causing jumping  as teeth could be missng.
-Loose wire connection between speedo and sensor
-The stepping motor in the speedometer has issues or is sticking

mine started bouncing around for a day.  checked it out, and the drive flange on the back of the tcase where the drive line bolts up had worked itself loose.  tightened it back down, hammered over the lock tab again, and its been good ever since. not sure why this had any effect on the speedo, but it did somehow.

hmm... my speedo bounces sometimes... i got a 89 toyota that had a 3.0 5speed and now its got the 3.4.. its always done it though... sometimes it will start bouncing way faster than normal and then go all the way to 110mph... shut the truck off and crank it back up and that fixes it sometimes... and sometimes it just fixes itself.. been doin it for about 3 years now... i havent fooled with it but now im thinkin about it

Fool with it now before the speedo cable breaks - They can be a pain to replace.
