Warn is a brand name. and you are undoubtedly paying for that name.... BUT they have excellent products too, and everything on that winch can be upgraded and or replaced with factory parts... which are not hard to come bye...

that being said... i know many ppl with the xrc8 winch also and they have no complaints. little slower, little louder.

me.... i have a warn 8274-50 that i bought 3-4th hell i dont know 5th hand. VERY early serial number. but anyway... i have replaced just the cable on it and the bushing on the end of the drum.  To me the Warn name is reliability.....

BTW.. i have never used my winch to get myself out...  of course im not daring as i could be with bald tires lol
Those are some huge welds!

warn is better, smittybuilt is China product.
I hear MileMarkers are decent winches too.

I was going to get the warn today but last night he said he hooked it up to test it and now it doesn't work. The only thing im worried about is it being 10 years old. I will see how it plays out. If all else fails I will go down and get a smittybilt. I know the manager he said 250 out the door

being that the warn is 10 y.o., I think I might lean towards the xrc8.  I have a xrc8 that has been on my truck for a bit over a year now.  It had its fair share of use last year winter wheeling.  I'm hoping it will last me a while. If your planning on using it a lot, I would go with a US made. If I had a choice, I would go with the warn or milemarker.  Smitty built is good, but like said, it's made in china.  I got mine as a promo from 4wheelparts for helping out set up for an event, thats the only reason I went with it.  But for the price, they are great.  just my  :twocents:

I'd offer him $100 for the warn.

I had a buddy with the smittybuilt.  It worked well for like 3 pulls and sucked after that.  I've had a warn m8000 for about the last 6 years and it's still going strong after lots of abuse.  I'd rather fix up an old warn than buy a new smittybuilt.

I offered him 130 not working and he said he can't because he doesn't think anything is really wrong with it since he used it in 2004. He thinks nothing could of happened to it from sitting for 7 years.

People never cease to amaze me.  It's electrical, and while designed to be guarded against the weather, isn't impervious.  Seals could have rotted out in the several years it sat, leaving wiring and connections unguarded against moisture.  I'd still lowball him.

Warn for sure, I've had mine going on 15 or so yrs.  Maybe use it once or twice a yr and have never had an issue.  Sits on the truck out in the open yr round in the weather.  Still has original cable and original bushings and original oil inside.

My fathers is close to 25 yrs old and is in the same condition as mine.

The issue he is having with that warn not working is if they are not used the copper contacts inside the control pack house will get a build up and lose connection.

I used to work for Warn for 15 yrs and built every winch they make (minus the new 16.5).  Easy to work on and easy to get parts for.
Build it right or get off the trail

Had my smittybuilt for 3 years now. Probably 20 pulls on it. Broke the cable on it
twice which I was expecting. It works awesome. Have an Incab switch to make it easier. A little slower then others but pulls strong.

I've seen them in action. Warn is a better winch IMO.

I couldnt find any used warns so i went with the smittybilt. Just couldnt shell out 900 bones for a new warn that i might use ounce a year.  I got a deal from my buddy at 4wheelparts, 280 out the door.
