Transferring FJ40 Steering?
« on: Jul 01, 2007, 10:49:57 AM »
There's what I believe to be a 1980 FJ40 at the local junk yard and I'm going pull the axles for my Samurai this week. The big question of the day is:

Can I adapt the FJ40 steering to work on my Samurai? I'd rather not have to pay $600+ for a custom steering set-up if I can avoid it. The Samurai will only be running 34s so it'll stay SUA and I'll be "trimming" like a high schooler on Prom night.

If I can adapt the FJ steering (at least for now) it would be a HUGE help in getting these axles in, then I can go from there and upgrade as I go. It's gonna be expensive enough regearing these things and rebuilding my spring mounts to take the FJ springs.

I have no problem taking all the steering equipment from the FJ including the gear box and pump. I just need to know what I should get.

Anyone have an opinion on this?
Thanks in advance!

The axles and the power steering are worth more than your samurai. You can make money off that fj to build you sami any way you want.

FJ axles and power steering are how I want to build my Samurai. Unfortunately, I can't get the whole thing to part it out because the junk yard gets titles for cars to be crushed so they can't do anything but sell parts.

I can understand some of you may be purists and don't want the classic FJs to be torn apart, but bottom line, this one's about to be crushed to about 10" tall. I'm gonna get what I can while I can.

I say go for it. Don't know if the steering will work, but the stock cruiser steering isn't that great. $600 seems pretty steep for steering too. I'd check with a sammy forum and see what kind of cross over conversions they are using. You could probably find a power steering box in the wrecking yard that could be adapted and convert that thing to cross-over steering.

Thanks, Fireball. I'm having trouble finding a complete steering setup for FJ axles. Best I'm seeing is to use Marlin's high steer arms ($200) and the local guy's steering setup ($300) but then I still need a steering box and pitman arm.

I did run across a guy who's running FJ axles and springs on his Samurai, so I'll be bugging him a lot as I go. In the meanwhile, My engine mods didn't cooperate as expected so I have to ship my carb back to Arizona for a few days for some work. If I end up needing more tips from the FJ guys I'll post back up here or on Pirate... but it'll be a while before I make much more of a move with this.

On a 80 model FJ axle the hy-steer kit for a mini truck will work arms and all.

I would go for an IFS box I just picked up two this weekend at Pull and Save for 40.00

You would be set for what ever size (within reason) then.

You can run with a passenger "Y" arm for now. Take two arms off cut one and weld it to the top very common with spring over 40's.

Yep, I ran a homebrew Y arm for a while as I saved up for a better system.  It was tolerable knowing it wouldn't be on there forever...

You can get Y arms from Aqualu if you want to go that way.

I'd think that high-steer would be your best bet in the long run.

I really appreciate everyone's help here, but I can't keep this thing running well enough so I'm selling everything I own associated with both my Samurai and my DD and I'm getting a JK.

Again- thanks for all your input. Very helpful information... but my agitation has culminated into a major change.

It's at a junk yard here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Do you need something from it? I'll be at the yard this weekend so if you want me to pull something I could pull it and ship it.

80 Series landcruiser front axles are very different than a mini.  The arms will not work.

Even if the FJ has power steering, it would be a nightmare to fit in your sammy..

I could not see the pictures they are not coming up I thought he was talking about a FJ-40.  Yes 80 axles are very different from 40's and 55's axles.  Sorry for the confusion on that.  I guess seeing the pictures would help.
