new bed

Any of you guys know if a 79-83 bed would fit on my 84 pickup? I definatley need a new bed cause mine is not only full of bondo but also starting to rust under he lips. I always liked the 79-83 bed but diddnt think it would look good but I have recently been thinking that I would get the fiberglass fenders and thought that might tie the bed in. Thanks for all the help guys.

i want to do the same thing to mine. was going to go with a 3rd gen(89-95) bed, but they're wider. i think the 1st gens might even be a bit narrower than the 2nd gen, maybe even a bit shorter. not sure. if you do it, post up some pics and measurements.

1st gen beds are the same width as second gens. I did this exact swap on my Dad's '87 after the truck was rear-ended.
The "87 wiring harness plugged into the '80 tail lights, and the gas filler neck lined up as well. The only issue with the swap is that the '80 bed sits about 1.5" away from the cab, whereas the '87 bed sat only .75" away. I was going to see what it would take to get the bed closer to the cab, i.e. elongate the bolt holes in both the bed & frame mounts, or remove/relocate them, but my Dad didn't care about the gap, just wanted the usable bed for his farm truck.
The 3rd gen beds will also swap over to a 1st gen frame, but the rear mounts don't line up, but that is an easy enough fix.

Didn't foreign market trucks maintain the 1st gen bed style through the 2nd generation? If so, then I would imagine that all the mounts would line up.
