3RZ-FE/A340F tranny cooler
« on: Dec 28, 2004, 08:45:53 AM »
Just picked up a DD in the form of a 1997 Tacoma, 3RZ-FE, auto, nice little barely broken in 4x4 with 151K miles :driving: .  I'd like to flush and fill with Redline ATF, and while I am at it add a tranny cooler.  What is a good cooler kit to go with?  I have VERY little time on my hands right now, with moving, building on to a home, and with a 5VZ-FE swap into an 87 4Runner SAS (thought that might provoke some interest, [troll mode OFF]), so I need a shake-the-box kit if possible.

Knowledge?  Already did a search of course...

Found this and thought I would share the wealth:

Before you let the AutoZone source scare you, they sell the same thing to TRD who then resells after adding a '1' in front of the price. :headscratch:

I have a tranny cooler that I am using for my power steering.

I will have to ask Marlin what company it was from, but it is a complete kit for around $25. Can't beat that!

Any tranny cooler from the auto store is OK.  Most people say the plate type is better than the tube and fin type.  $50 at kragen for a hayden.  Supposedly, hayden makes the TRD tranny cooler and the TRD tranny cooler goes for about $200.  The only difference is the TRD cooler has better mounts.

Well, if the ideal of excluding the lesser equipped (stock or otherwise) is accepted... there is no fundamental difference between that and a Sierra CLub ideal of exclusion. If we cannot embrace the 4wheel users as a whole. We are not fighting for access. I cannot be that shortsighted

Yeah, I wondered about tube-n-fin versus stacked fin.  The argument I have heard, is the tube type is stronger (in the event of ... what?), the fin type is more efficient.  The TRD is the fin type and as indicated above is likely the same Hayden cooler.  The tube type is cheaper though.  Prolly doesn't matter.

Interesting idea on cooling the PS, Mike!  Were you having problems with it?  I might just have to do that on my soon-to-be 5VZ-FE 87 SAS 4Runner!  Someday... :rivers:
