need r151f help
« on: Nov 14, 2010, 10:51:13 AM »
i have 2 trucks that i am combining into 1 at the moment
1 is a 85 4x4 22r witha g52
the other is a 86 2wd 22rte with the r151f.
i would love to use the r trans but as we know the bolt patter is different on the tailshaft for 4x4 conversion.

so is there an adapter to mate the g52 tailshaft to the r151 trans to convert it to 4x4, or should i just give up hope and put the g52 on the turbo motor?

I think the two would be different. The thing that makes a 4wd r151f special is the tail housing so the 2wd version is not good for much. I think the way to convert it would be to get a tail housing from a blown up r150 for cheap and swap it on. You then need an adapter from marlin or inchworm to mount the gear driven case. Do your homework first as I have not done this but it is theoretically possible. You might also need a 23 spline gear set as I'm not sure if they make a 21 spline adapter. In short you are probably better off using the g52 or upgrading to a w56.

Before you scrap the r151f see if it has the lower first gear set. These are getting hard to find and might be worth something to someone.

it does have the lower gears, and that is why i want to keep the trans along with helping with turbo spool.
did some of the v6s have r151s or did they come with the r150

As far as I know they were all r150s. These are not popular due to the chain driven case. These cases are not bad they are just difficult to go duel cases with. If you are planning on running a single case the simplest thing might be to use the r150 case with the r150 tail housing. This could save you needing a 400$ adapter. These came behind 3.0L v6s. The 3.0 is not a popular motor and often has head gasket issues. If you look around you should be able to find someone parting one out for cheap.

Again I am just assuming this is all possible so I would recommend doing further research before buying anything. If you do this swap please post back with the results so the next person can find the info. :)
