Bought an engine that supposedly had about 10,000 miles on it (83 22r). Installed it in my 83 and from the time it fired up it smoked out the pvc hole in the valve cover and the vent hose at the front of the cover. Blue smoke would billow out from those two places and it never stopped even after warm up. After a short time at idle hitting the gas would produce a cloud of smoke from the exhaust.
Figured it would be the head with that much smoke, valve seals etc.. Took my old head to the shop and had a complete rebuild done. Took the head off of the 'new' engine and it does not look bad, looking into the intake holes and using a q-tip I find very little oil on the valve or stems The up side of the head is very clean and appears to have had work done on it. Head is coated with a thick coating of burned oil at each dome, plugs are all oil fouled.
The pistons are also covered with an even thicker coating of burned oil. A pretty heavy ridge is at the top of each cyl. and the pistons seem almost loose in the cyl, 20-25 thou. side to side.
I'm thinking I should just take the darn thing out and rebuild my old motor and chalk it up to experience, buyer beware and all that.
What do you guys think??
