I'm trying to confirm what transfer case adapter I'll need to fit a geared transfer into my 99 hilux. It's confusing because of the mismatch between years and parts from Australian market vehicles to US ones. I just want to fit a single case with 4.7 gears.
My car is a 99 hilux dual cab factory fitted with:
IFS torsion bar front
3RZ engine distributorless
W56 gearbox as per the build plate (this causes hassles with talking to US people as W56s in US had gear drive cases)
chain drive transfer case with electric front wheel drive activation
I am pretty sure the transfer is the 26 spline job that would have been behind the G58 box that was sold in the US. As I said above, the hassle is that the build plate says W56 and I am thinking that it truly is a W56, just with a different transfer adapter housing to fit the chain drive case. Toyota pulled the same trick on my previous car which was a 89 4runner IFS. The plate said G52 but it had the chain drive transfer. I got crawlers into that by finding a G52 and it's case from a base model solid front axle hilux and swapping that in.
I'm also pretty sure the only 2 transfer cases supplied here in hiluxs and 4runners between 1989 to 2005 were the 21 spline gear drive ones and the 26 spline chain drive ones. Only the base model hilux with solid front axle had the gear drive and anything IFS had the chain drive in either manual front wheel drive J pattern shift (H2-H4-N-L) or the electric shift (H-N-L).
