Manual or Automatic Tranny
« on: Aug 06, 2010, 09:44:22 PM »
I am going to eventually run doubles and I know most go with the manual tranny.  I have both of them.  Just wondering what the good and bad is of both.

with a manual its easier and you have tons more useable gearing choices you can choose low low and 5th gear, with a auto your pretty much stuck with low low and 1st gear so on and so forth. Its easier to go duals with a manual trans also from what I've read and heard.

That USED to be true but it isn't any more.

You can mix and match a LOT of parts to use a LOT of different combination's if you know what you're dealing with.

Best advice to stay all toyota is to dump the a340h for a a340f out of a later rig and swap the a340h bellhousing onto it so it'll bolt to your engine.  Now just toss a Marlin V6 adapter plate on the back of it and you have a perfect place to bolt geared duals.

Want to get front dig with no overpriced garbage rear disconnect?  Get an AW4 out of a cherokee, bolt the a340 bellhousing and oil pan onto it then chop the 231 apart and bolt a box 4 rocks adapter onto it and run a dana 300 like I did.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Auto is inefficient and wastes tons of power in 22re and 3.0, if you are running a 3.4 or bigger then it is a viable option- my opinions :)   oh, and manuals are FUN unless your auto has a slap shifter

Auto all the way cuz on the trail in low range and low low range even a 22r has enough power, and have an auto allows you to ease into obstacles a little softer.

All very good options.  I believe I will go with a manual.  I like all the gear choices and I forgot all about the auto taking so much power up witch is no big deal on trail but on the road is.  I think a manual is easier to work also.  Less to fail on a manual.  I think I will end up doing a hand throttle at some time to so taking off in a bad spot will be easier.

manual yes. auto's are prone to problems due to many electronics and wires and when it goes bad sucks. I can already feel the a340h going out in my truck (it misses shifts, and it also jumps shifts, and jumps from 4th to 2nd etc. lol. it takes forever to warm up after that it is ok lol, good thing i got the manual to swap it.

So ya just go with manual
