opinions on compression and leakedown test results
« on: Apr 20, 2010, 09:48:28 PM »
well i picked up an 87 yota, 22re with a blown headgasket, first thing i did was a compression test, #'s front to back are 80-75-110-110, very low across the board, so i went and picked up a cylinder leakdown tester, tested all cylinders and got no more than %25 leakdown, but all cyl were leaking into the radiator which i thought was odd.

i didnt hear any air from the dipstick tube or the intake or exhaust, so i am thinking about picking up one of the brand new heads off ebay that comes with the gasket kit and headbolts for under $350 shipped link>>http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyota-22R-22RE-Cylinder-Head-Pick-Up-Truck-4Runner_W0QQitemZ350336648783QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item5191b1064f

has anybody here used one of these heads?

i suppose by the leakdown test i would assume the rings to be in decent shape? all test were done cold as the truck does not run.

I'd pull the head that is on your motor and send it out to be checked before you buy a new one.  It may have warped or cracked, but untill you pull it off, you'll never know.  It may just be a blown headgasket. but if you see any cracks in the head, don't bother to send it to the machine shop, just get a new one.

Also, while it is off, you can inspect the block.  If it's a blown HG, chances are one of the piston tops is really clean from pumping coolant out the exhaust - so you'll know where to check the HG.

If the cylinder walls are all scored up or if the deck is warped then you will at least need some machining, if not a new block.
