4.3 wiring question
« on: Nov 29, 2004, 04:51:19 PM »
I am putting a 1988 chevy 4.3L in a 86 toyota 4 runner, I dont have the money to buy a new wiring harness but still have the blazer the engine came out of, I want to use the old harness for now, does anybody know what wires are used for the power, +, Ingnition, etc...? I have looked all over the web, but nobody mentions using an existing harness.  :help:

You might want to consider buying a FSM, or a cheap knock off like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7937041422&category=34216

Conversions contain alot of wiring and some diagram of some sorts is a must have. I remember I spent almost $80 on a factory wiring service manual from the dealer for my conversion..

..also if you have a local garage who you are pretty close buddies with, then maybe they wouldnt mind printing out the parts of the wiring diagrams that you need. Marlin's automotive service next door to the Crawler business has the Mitchell ondemand and Alldata systems and I was able to print out about half of the wiring I needed, but its not the same as the FSM. The FSM was all fully illustrated color pictures including color pictures of each and every plug with indications of each and every where. It was a true life safer.

You may also want to reconsider where you mount the computer. The left and right corners of the fire wall are subject to leaks. If you have a water blaster use that to clean the fire wall and engine compartment. I did.

You could buy a chiltons.

That was one of my questions also, thanks. Where did you mount it, or is this something you just know?

For wiring diagrams go to the local public library.  They have an automotive section stocked with Mitchell Manuals, like shops use.  Make copies for a couple bucks.

I mounted my ECU behind the lower right, passenger, kick panel where the factory 22RE ECU went.  Had to hammer some clearance and it's a tight fit but it works.  I used a Howell harness.

Get a goo pin extractor to remove the Toyota wires from the factory connectors.  Do it right the first time.  Electrical hack jobs are the worst kind of everlasting nightmares.

I'm in Hanford if you need to see how I did mine let me know.

For the wiring, PM Crash on PBB - he's a GM tech and can probably rattle this off the top of his head...

For the ECU, I mounted mine on the bottom of the glove-box in it's factory black plastic cover.  I mounted the diagnostic port just to the right of it below the speaker.  I used one of the heater motor mounts and black zip-ties to hold the ECU in place.  You can see the diagnostic port to the right of the interior cage here.  The black mass below it and to the left of the downbar is the ECU cover.

No one would really even know they are there if I didn't tell them.  Out of the way, yet accessible.

Body lift will depend 100% on where you mount your engine.  Check out Jay K's site for a great amount of info on the 4.3 swap...
