New to Marlin Crawler
« on: Mar 05, 2010, 02:49:58 PM »
Hey I am new to marlin crawler. I am a student at the University of Northern Colorado lookin to get into off roading a little more. I drive a 90 4runner.
I am wondering, what should I go with first; Armor, or fixing the saggy-ass problem of the 2nd gens. If I fix the saggy-ass problem what would you guys recommend, the 80 landcruiser coils with new shocks, coil overs, just lifting the back 2 inches?
I have gone wheelin a couple of times, nothing to hard but am up for a challenge.

All help is appriciated...
Thanks,
Kevan

Welcome.  I'm just up the road at CSU.  Both are priorities.  But I would say armor first.  Particularly rock sliders.  As for what coils to use, I'm not really a Runner guy, so I wouldn't have the most reliable information on that one.

For leveling the rear you might look into some Coil Spring Spacers as a cheap fix.

A stock Toyota w/31's, body protection, recovery gear, and another rig to wheel with is all you need to concentrate on now until your skill level improves.

Yeah I was thinking armor first. I don't know how to weld though which screws me with getting sliders.

I'm currently moving, so I don't have a 220 at my current location yet.  But as soon as I do, I can help you weld up some sliders.

good morning, my name is roger, i'm new to marlin crawler, and  a rookie rock crawler. i'm 48 years old, and my body hurts in a lot of places from dirt bikes. about a year and a half ago, i started getting involved in wheelin, ( mostly because you sit in a seat with a belt , surrounded by a cage) and now, i'm push my vehicle limits (and luck)  educating myself as i go, ie: people on the trail, and sites like this one, i've decided on toyota. i'm currently running a full size rig(short wheel base- K5) :blah: i'm looking to trade a very nice boat for a semi built runner or pickup. i'll sell the blazer once i'm in a toyota. looking forward to a long relationship with marlin and friends.... thanks for listening,,,,R.G. The K5 - what year and is it the 2 door or 4 door version?

Oh , and to the original poster, tires and brakes first, of course.  Then suspension.  Next up is locking it and gearing it right(this can also happen at the time you do tires of course).  Beyond that, armor and sliders is often more than enough.  You don't have to go silly with these trucks.  SAS/Lifting/dual-range/etc are all advanced stuff to be done later - plenty of people wheel for the first few years or even decades without doing that.  My 87 is pretty much stock other than some of the aforementioned mods and about a "2 inch lift" from new springs a few years back.(ie - rides stock height, about what a new Tacoma does vs sagging like 95% of what you see out there)

It handles trails, snow, and all of the basic non rock crawling stuff fine if you go slow.(that's the hard part for me - I'm not terribly patient)

Looks good, I like it!  And the v6 is fine...it just gets a bad rap compared to the other Toyota motors.

I love the thing... I dont ever want to get rid of it no matter how slow it is... plus it keeps me from getting in a lot more trouble with the police and my speeding!  :driving:
