People running shock hoops
« on: Dec 04, 2004, 07:56:54 PM »
I have a pair of Marlin's shock hoops to install.  I'm trying to decide whether to cut the inner fender and mount them in a vertical position or not cut the inner fender and lean the hoop outward to clear it.  I do not have any body lift and the hoops are pretty tall (even though I bought the short ones) so they would lean outward quite a bit.   I would like input on what you have done and pics would be awesome if you have them.  Thanks in advance!

I know that cutting the infender may not be your first idea  but it should be.   I think that if you were to lean it out that when your tire stuffs that if could start rubbing on the shock.  I can post some pics of my late for you.

I'll have to agree that leaning them out may make them come in contact with the wheel during compression.  Remember that the wheel moves in an arc inwards during compression.  This is the reason people go with the wide rear axle.  So that the tire doesn't contact the frame during compression.  I'd post a pic of my towers but they a ford towers, so that wouldn't help.

Just cut the fenders.  RockStomper used to sell generic shock hoops and that is what I got with Rancho 5012's.  Not the best cutting job but they are in there and welded on.  Have been meaning to fab some naugahide panels with snaps to cover the holes but have never got around to it.  The holes really help to keep the engine cool in the summer but doesn't allow it to warm up very fast at 0*F.

I've cut the inner fenders on the last 3 trucks I've built with no ill effects.   Just make sure theres nothing on the other side when you cut!  :eyebrow:

I'd say to lean 'em in and stand them up as much as they'll go- that will keep your tires off of your shox, especially if you start running a larger tire later on.
