Please! Help!!
« on: Jan 24, 2010, 10:42:38 AM »
HELP ME!!
so i replaced the head gasket in my 86 2wd 22r about a month or two ago n yesterday it started blowin steam out the exhaust again on the way to work! all my coolants in my oil again n just did a compressio test which reads
175 in cyl #1
150 in cyl #2
175 in cyl #3
250 in cyl #4.
anybody have any ideas whats going on here?? i thought compression would be low in 1 or more cylinders if it was a head gasket again (i bought the cheapest kit the first time).

250 is WAY too high for an r series!  Did you shave the head, make sure the block was flat and use a toyota gasket, or did you use a felcrap?

Water leaking into #4 would raise the compression................

Did you have the head checked/repaired or just replace the gasket? Like kneedownnate mentioned, straight head, flat block, and quality factory gasket should last.

You also have to have clean head bolt threads and good head bolts properly torqued. If your block gets decked, make sure the timing cover is on it so it gets shaved too.

Did it get over heated at any time?

Factory Toyota head gasket should cost about the same.

I would definately run a factory toyota head gasket. They are better than any toyota head gasket I've ever seen. The only place that you maybe able to get a good after market gasket is LC Engineering at least from what I know. I had a truck do the same thing. I took the head into the machine shop. They said it checked out good. I re installed it only to find out that the head wasn't flat, it was a night mare. It's no fun doing the same job twice for no reason.

Why bother replacing a shitty gasket with another shitty gasket?  Buy a toyota head gasket and be done  ;)

Just for the record rock products are good. Did you torque everything to spec and in the correct pattern? Also did you originally have the head machined? Did you retorque it after a few hundred miles?

I am running rock parts on one of my 22r's and haven't had any issues but I would not run one of their head gaskets. I have been told not to expect more than 20 thousand miles out of them. The only head gaskets I've personally had good luck with are the factory ones. I'm sure there is someone else out there that makes a good one. For Toyota felpro definately isn't the ticket.
