Transfer case basics
« on: Feb 27, 2010, 09:59:47 PM »
Alright, a newb needs some things explained to him...

First of all, I have a 1986 4Runner, with a 2.4l diesel swapped into it.  It has the R150 transmission.  I already have a transfer case on there (duh), so if I want a dual case set up, do I buy a 'single' transfer case, and stack it with the existing one, or do I order a dual case, and completely take out the stock case?

Secondly, which one do I need?  I'd like to be able to crawl damn slow, especially as I get larger tires onto the rig, so which gearing should I be looking at?

Wish I didn't have to ask such dumb questions, but I guess I have to start somewhere.

You need a crawler box plus an adpater of course. Or just buy a top shift or forward shift t-case and make it into a crawler box.
Also is this a R150F ? If so you need a different adapter than the one I posted, but you will still need a crawl box.
Here is a link: http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/t/c-adapters/1988-95-3vz-e-30-liter-v6-drivetrains, for the chain t-case to gear driven t-case.

Cool - Thanks for the info.

To get a little more accurate...  I believe my transfer case is the chain driven - need to double check this, but at the moment I'm in Canada, and my truck is in Texas - won't be able to crawl under it for another 6 or so weeks.  In any case, I'm pretty sure it's chain driven, and is the r150f transmission.  Also, the engine was originally from Japan - RHD vehicle.  It's now in a LHD 4runner.  Do I need a right hand or left hand output?  I believe right hand, but could be wrong.  Assuming I need a right hand output, and have a r150f transmission and chain driven transfer case, am I correct in thinking my options are as follows:

A complete dual transfer case setup, swapped in, tearing my old transfer case out.  ie. this kit:
http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/line-ups/dual-t/cases/gear-drive-right-hand-front-output-dual-transfer-case
This would completely get rid of the stock chain driven transfer case, correct?

Or, I can add in the crawl box only, behind my existing chain driven transfer case, using this option:
http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/line-ups/crawl-boxes/gear-drive-unit-right-hand-output-chain-drive-tcase

Are there any differences between these two options?

And, will these bolt up, and if not, which adapters are required?  I've been reading through the website, but I'm not exactly sure which is for which application yet.  Thanks,

Spruce

To my understanding this is the adapter you need to run a gear driven t-case behind it. and that second link http://www.marlincrawler.com/transfer-case/line-ups/crawl-boxes/gear-drive-unit-right-hand-output-chain-drive-tcase
seems right. before you order you should also talk to them just to double check.
the first link is not correct as you need two adapters to run two gear drivens ones or just run an adapter from the chain to gear and call it done.
